Read previewWall Street experienced a big shakeup on Monday when two big banks announced new leaders for their investment-banking units. Citi's hire comes just weeks after JPMorgan promoted Raghavan to the sole head of its deals business, forcing America's biggest bank by assets to regroup. Under Raghavan, JPMorgan rose to No. For the last decade, the 59-year-old has been CEO of the bank's commercial bank, dedicated to corporate lending, including to Silicon Valley startups and real-estate investors. In an internal memo announcing his new role, bank executives said he's "significantly" grown revenue in the region since he took over the region in 2019.

A Bloomberg report did not say former U.S. President Barack Obama was late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s “middle man,” despite online posts that misrepresent the article on revelations from court filings by JPMorgan Chase and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “BREAKING: President Obama has been named as Jeffrey Epstein’s middle man to JP Morgan according to Bloomberg” (here). Some posts link to an Aug. 16 Bloomberg report with the headline, “Epstein Tapped JPMorgan to Help Goldman Lawyer Open Account” (here). The report mentions a “former Obama White House lawyer,” but it does not name Obama as Epstein’s so-called “middle man” to JPMorgan. The largest U.S. bank detailed how Epstein allegedly funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments and loans to a former U.S. Virgin Islands governor and his wife. The territory in a separate filing cited a 2011 email from a senior JPMorgan executive about suspicious cash withdrawals by Epstein. The filing containing the U.S. Virgin Islands accusations was more than 680 pages. The U.S. Virgin Islands also failed to show that the bank committed obstruction, JPMorgan said.

At the time, there were reports that he paid cash to girls for "massages" — a code word for sex. When asked about the large withdrawals, Epstein said he needed to pay for jet fuel. JPMorgan's private bank has a policy to "discourage" large cash deposits and spending. Bankers, according to an excerpt of the guidelines filed in court Tuesday morning, are responsible for getting clients to explain their large cash withdrawals. "Issue is he really never stopped the large cash withdrawals," a compliance officer wrote then.

JPMorgan countered that the U.S. Virgin Islands was also to blame for allowing Epstein's sexual abuse of young women and teenage girls, saying the territory used its powers to enable these crimes. The U.S. Virgin Islands is suing JPMorgan for at least $190 million, saying the bank ignored red flags about Epstein because he was a wealthy and lucrative client from 1998 to 2013. Ahead of a scheduled Oct. 23 trial, the U.S. Virgin Islands wants a judge to declare that JPMorgan participated in Epstein's sex trafficking and obstructed law enforcement. The U.S. Virgin Islands has already received more than $105 million from Epstein's estate, and reached a settlement with billionaire Leon Black, a former Epstein friend. Court filings show how Jeffrey Epstein exerted power in the US Virgin Islands, two of which he owned. A financier worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Epstein owned two islands in the US Virgin Islands (there are roughly 50 islands overall). He had donated generously to Democratic politicians from the US Virgin Islands for years. With the assistance of the US Virgin Islands' first lady, Epstein navigated the territory's political waters unscathed. The court records show that, at least in the US Virgin Islands, he exerted influence with little friction.

At least, that’s the impression left by Jamie Dimon’s answers to recent questioning in relation to Jeffrey Epstein, the dead sex-trafficker who was a JPMorgan (JPM.N) client for 15 years. Taken altogether, the case is a sign that the bank is simply too big for one person to manage. Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 1998 until 2013. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Litigation related to Epstein is still pending between the U.S. Virgin Islands and JPMorgan, as are claims by JPMorgan against its former head of investment banking, Jes Staley.

NEW YORK, June 12 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) agreed to pay about $290 million to settle a class action lawsuit by Jeffrey Epstein's victims, resolving a large part of litigation over the bank's relationship with the disgraced financier. Monday's settlement came 3-1/2 weeks after Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), where Epstein was a client from 2013 to 2018, agreed to pay $75 million to end a similar lawsuit by Epstein victims. "A settlement with Epstein's victims frees JPMorgan to begin to turn the page and change the narrative." The $290 million settlement amount was confirmed by David Boies, a lawyer for Epstein's victims. Last month, Rakoff said JPMorgan could be liable to Epstein's victims if they could show Staley had firsthand knowledge that Epstein ran a sex-trafficking venture.

JPMorgan Chase said Monday it has reached a settlement with one of late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein's victims, who had been suing the bank in federal court. JPMorgan argues that Staley is responsible for any civil liability a jury might find in the Epstein case. Last month, Deutsche Bank, where Epstein became a client after he was forced out by JPMorgan in 2013, settled with Epstein victims for $75 million. The announcement comes more than a week after JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon gave a deposition in the Epstein cases. On Friday, lawyers for the Epstein victim, called Jane Doe 1 in documents, asked the court to reopen Dimon's deposition.

In his deposition, Dimon said he had barely heard of Epstein before the financier's arrest. JPMorgan is also being sued over Epstein by the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the financier allegedly also abused victims on a private island he owned. The bank is suing Staley to cover losses it may face in both lawsuits. Staley, who was Barclays' (BARC.L) CEO from 2015 to 2021, is expected to sit for a deposition on Saturday. Lawyers for a Jeffrey Epstein victim asked a federal judge on Friday to allow them to take new testimony from JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and others as part of a lawsuit against the bank over its dealings with sex predator Epstein. JPMorgan denies any wrongdoing but has said it regrets having had Epstein as a client. McCawley noted that Rakoff in May had admonished JPMorgan for turning over documents to the plaintiff's legal team "at an inexplicably slow rate." Dimon made the remarks in a deposition for lawsuits against the bank related to its alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. Dimon testified that he had never personally met or spoken over the phone with Epstein. Dimon testified that the bank’s general counsel would have had the final say to cut ties with a client like Epstein. According to Dimon, Staley and Erdoes could not have overridden the general counsel. “What has become clear is that Epstein could not have run his sex trafficking operation without the valuable assistance of JPMorgan, Chase.

Dimon said in the deposition he was not aware of the email at the time but "I know it today." JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon looks on during the inauguration of the new French headquarters of US' JP Morgan bank on June 29, 2021 in Paris. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon testified last week that top bank executive Mary Erdoes and the firm's then-head lawyer had the authority to boot sex predator Jeffrey Epstein as a customer well before Erdoes finally took that step in 2013. During his deposition, Dimon was shown an email that JPMorgan's then-general counsel Cutler Cutler sent Erdoes about Epstein on July 21, 2011. In that email, Cutler wrote: "I would like to put it and him behind us. Cutler, in his own deposition last week, "testified under oath that Jes Staley and Mary Erdoes made the decision to retain Epstein as a customer of the bank," a lawyer told Dimon.

Bank employees also met with Epstein after his accounts were closed to discuss other clients and introductions he could make to potential clients, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the meetings. The interaction with Epstein was typical for a client of the private bank, a JPMorgan spokesman said after the article was published. JPMorgan is being sued in Manhattan federal court by women who said Epstein sexually abused them, and by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein owned a private island. JPMorgan did business with Epstein as early as 1998, and managed about 55 Epstein-related accounts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Epstein was a client for about five years after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to a Florida state prostitution charge.
New York CNN —A new court filing alleges JPMorgan Chase executives were aware of sex abuse and trafficking allegations against its then-client Jeffrey Epstein, several years before the financial institution cut ties. The new complaint against JP Morgan, filed Wednesday, comes days after its CEO Jamie Dimon sat down with CNN’s Poppy Harlow in an exclusive interview. A JP Morgan spokesperson declined to comment to CNN about the newly filed complaint, which was part of the lawsuit filed in December. Attorneys for JP Morgan have denied the allegations. High level bank officials also met about Epstein’s account and the allegations against him as far back as 2008, according to the court filing.
NEW YORK, April 12 (Reuters) - A new version of a lawsuit accusing JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) of aiding in Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking includes claims that the bank ignored pleas to cut ties with the financier, and that someone joked about whether Epstein knew Miley Cyrus. In a complaint made public on Wednesday, the U.S. Virgin Islands said JPMorgan compliance officials urged the bank to sever ties with Epstein years before it did so in 2013.
